A software trial that answers the right questions
Give a new app a real job before you give it a subscription. Use this checklist to turn a trial into a clear decision.
Read the task management guideADGH Sandbox: A working example used to test this platform. This is general guidance, not a review of a particular app.
Before you start
- Write down the problem you want to solve in one sentence.
- Choose three real tasks to complete during the trial.
- Note which features you need and check whether the trial includes them.
- Check whether payment details are required and when any charge would begin.
- Set a reminder before the trial ends, leaving time to export your work or cancel.
Put it through a normal working day
- Capture a task quickly, then find it again without relying on memory.
- Move a piece of work from planning to completion.
- Try the devices and browser you actually use.
- Invite a collaborator only if sharing is part of your normal workflow.
- Turn off notifications you do not need and see what remains useful.
- Record friction as it happens rather than relying on your final impression.
Check the practical details
- Confirm the price, billing currency, tax treatment where shown, and monthly or annual commitment for the plan you need.
- Check whether collaborators, storage or integrations change the cost.
- Export a small sample and open it outside the app. Check task names, notes, dates and attachments you care about.
- Find the account deletion and subscription cancellation instructions; they may be separate actions.
Make the decision
Keep a short record: problem solved, remaining friction, full cost, and exit route. If the app only works after rebuilding your entire routine, decide whether that effort is justified before paying.
You do not need to use the whole trial. If a required feature is missing, stop and keep your existing system while you compare another option.
